My dad used to get up early—usually around 4:30 in the morning—and just sit in the dark, sipping his coffee. I remember how my brother and I would wonder, “Why in the world doesn’t he turn on a light?” It seemed so odd to us at the time.
But now…I get it.
These days, I find myself doing the very same thing. I love getting up early, slipping quietly into my living room, settling into my recliner, and just sitting in the dark with my coffee in hand. There’s something incredibly peaceful about it. The darkness feels like a warm blanket wrapping around me, inviting me to just sit, think, reflect.
Sometimes, I use this time to plan out my day. Other mornings, I pray for the people in my life or simply sit and praise the Lord for all of His many blessings. And sometimes, I take my coffee out to the deck and wait quietly for that first bird to sing. It’s usually the Robin—always the early one. Then one by one, the others join in, and before long, it’s a full-blown symphony of bird songs.
It really is the perfect way to begin my day. And yes…I’ve become an early riser, just like my dad. He always said the morning was the best part of the day—and I have to agree.
Thank You, Lord God, for mornings like this…for quiet moments, for birdsong, for hot coffee, and for blessings too many to count.
